Observership Program / Advanced Clinical Training

Department of Neurosurgery, Stroke Center
Sapporo Teishinkai Hospital

Program Information

The department of neurosurgery, Stroke Center, Sapporo Teishinkai Hospital is offering two training programs for foreign neurosurgeons. The ‘Clinical Observership Program’ and the ‘Advanced Clinical Training (ACT) ’. We are committed to providing high-quality continuing education for those domestic and international neurosurgeons, eager to learn and expand their horizon. The difference between observership program and advanced clinical training are time-period, certain requirements, and processing time. Both trainings educational experience consists of participation in open surgery, daily morning conference, and practice anastomosis. The purpose and benefits of its training is extensive. Obtaining surgical techniques and anatomical knowledge are important of course; however, we place a lot of value on learning how to behave and have the right mindset as a neurosurgeon through regular patient care. During the training, the observer has an opportunity to witness innovative surgical techniques for cerebrovascular and skull base surgery, and also learn surgical anatomy and the theoretical indication of neurosurgery. This program is designed to learn safer and less invasive surgical approaches, developing diagnostic skills through advanced micro-neurosurgical training, and enrich their experiences to benefit their patients and the future research. Participants for observership program may attend anywhere from 1 week to a year, but they are not permitted to do any medical intervention and treatment due to Japanese Medical Law.
Participants for advanced clinical training program start anywhere from 3 months to up to two years. Additional documents need to be submitted to the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare of Japan for permission. It will take approximately 2 months to process this application after submission. Please see the activity details of clinical observership program and advanced clinical training (ACT) and requirements. Please feel free to ask for further information. Sapporo Teishinkai Hospital and Dr. Tanikawa’s team welcomes you!
