Observership Program / Advanced Clinical Training

Department of Neurosurgery, Stroke Center
Sapporo Teishinkai Hospital

Program Information

The Sapporo Teishinkai Hospital Stroke Center Department of Neurosurgery is offering two training programs for foreign neurosurgeons: the "Clinical Observership Program" and the "Advanced Clinical Training (ACT)". We are committed to providing high-quality continuing education for domestic and international neurosurgeons eager to learn and expand their horizon.

Our two programs differ in terms of admission requirements, available time frames, and processing time. Both programs include participation in open surgery and participation in our daily morning conferences. The purpose and benefits of this program is extensive. Obtaining surgical techniques and anatomical knowledge are important of course; however, we at our department emphasize the significance of building and cultivating a proper mindset and character as a neurosurgeon in order to provide the best possible patient care. During the training, participants of the Clinical Observership Program will have the opportunity to witness innovative surgical techniques for both cerebrovascular and skull base surgery, to deepen their understanding of surgical anatomy, and learn about theoretical aspects of neurosurgical treatment indications. Our program is designed to demonstrate less invasive and thus safer surgical approaches, to train advanced micro-neurosurgical techniques, to help develop diagnostic skills, and ultimately to enrich the trainees’ clinical experience so that their patients and their future research may benefit from it.

Participants of the Observership Program may attend anywhere from 1 week to a year. However, in accordance with Japanese Medical Law, clinical observers may not partake in any medical procedures.

Participants of Advanced Clinical Training Program may attend anywhere from 3 months to up to 2 years. Applicants are required to submit additional documents to the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare in order to be granted permission for medical procedures. For details, please see the activity details for the Clinical Observership Program and the Advanced Clinical Training Program as well as the respective requirements. Please feel free to ask us for any further information.

The Sapporo Teishinkai Hospital and Dr. Tanikawa’s team welcome you!
